This is the outline for a proposal for a new kind of elevated cycle way. The sky cycle way is an elevated cycle network which reduces commute time for travel for cyclists. This network turns any city into a flat Amsterdam or Cambridge. We believe this is the lowest cost for installation for any personal rapid transit system.

What a driverless world could look like | Wanis Kabbaj
I like this talk because it argues for multi-dimensional cities ( such as you would get with elevated cycle lanes ).

The architecture firm which made this cycleway is Copenhagen based firm Dissing +Weitling. This company is known for the creation of Danish Bicycle Snake Cycle Route.
I like the idea I'm not sure it will be successful ( imagine a train or car which wiggled for no reason )

More examples of how thin a cycle lane track could be
Visual intrusion is one of the big objections to a monorail. This shows how minimal a cycle based system could be. Again a real system would be flat have some 'pod' to improve aerodynamics & cover and pedals naturally.
Sky cycle ride
OK I'm not actually suggesting your have such a 'ride' as part of your journey to work ( but I think someone is ) . This does show
- The visual impact of a cycle mono-rail would be minimal ( see how far the cable goes with out towers.
- The inherent cost is low ( look at the size of the twin cables - ok they are sized for one person )
- People are good with heights( if it's safe enough )

Interesting that people are building guerilla bike lanes. Highlights the difficulty of retrofitting cycling into a automotive centric city.

If your city is up to capacity on traffic flows what can you do?
If your city street is packed with cars like image (1) you might think that the 'disused' cycle path might be a waste of space.
But you would be wrong - As figure 2 shows the actual density of a 4 lanes of bumper to bumper traffic is quite low. Figure 3 shows what this look likes as a bus, but for this blog figure 4 looks 'quite' but (Photo credit: Phil Sheffield, Tampa Tribune

Cycling news in Brisbane — Briscycle
If you want to add a big cycle lane for a packed city think about the water.
This aquatic water way in Brisbane isn't elevated but it is a seperate . I think it's pretty cool and a good example of what can be done. Personally it would be better covered/shelterd . It would be good to have narrow lanes in London's quite canals.
